Claude (claude.ai) - The chat interface. What most people think of when they hear "Claude."

Claude Code - A terminal-based coding agent that reads your codebase and executes tasks.

Claude Cowork - An agentic tool that connects to your apps and takes actions on your computer.

Claude (The Chat Interface)

This is the original. The one you probably started with.

What it does:

Best for:

• Quick questions and one-off tasks

• Can't take action in your other tools

The bottom line: Claude chat is your Swiss Army knife. Great for thinking, writing, and research. But it can't DO things in your other apps.

Claude Code

This is Claude with hands.

What it does:

• Reads your entire codebase
• Edits files directly
• Runs terminal commands
• Handles git workflows (commits, PRs, branches)
• Spawns "agent teams" that coordinate on complex tasks

Best for:

• Developers who want AI that actually writes and ships code
• Debugging and refactoring
• Automating repetitive development tasks
• Teams that want AI-assisted code review and PRs

Strengths:

• Lives in your terminal, IDE, or browser
• Understands your full project context
• Can run tests and verify its own work
• Agent Teams let multiple AI agents coordinate on a task

• Works with VS Code, JetBrains, and standalone

Weaknesses:

• Learning curve if you're not comfortable in a terminal

Claude Cowork

This is Claude with hands (for everyone else).

Cowork lets Claude take actions directly on your computer and inside your apps. It's doing the work instead of just answering questions.

What it does:

• Connects to Google Drive, Gmail, Excel, PowerPoint, Slack, and more
• Organizes files, renames documents, deletes duplicates
• Generates reports, spreadsheets, and presentations
• Runs batch operations (convert formats, compress images, standardize naming)
• Automates browser tasks when paired with Claude in Chrome
• Uses customizable plugins for specific workflows

Best for:

• Anyone drowning in repetitive computer tasks
• Knowledge workers who live in Google Workspace or Microsoft 365
• People who want AI that actually takes action, not just gives advice
• Solo operators and teams who need automation without code
