forget everything you know about AI. this is the only skill that matters

The best advice I could give to anyone wanting to learn AI isn't about prompting. It isn't about picking the right model. It isn't about learning to code.

The best advice I could give to anyone wanting to learn AI isn't about prompting. It isn't about picking the right model. It isn't about learning to code.

It's learning how to build Skills.

Not "skills" as in abilities. Skills as in reusable instruction files that turn any AI into a specialist at a specific task.

This is the difference between using AI as a fancy search engine and using AI as a team of employees who actually know how to do your job.

Why Skills Beat Prompts Every Time

Most people use AI like this: Open ChatGPT. Type a request. Get a response. Close the tab. Repeat tomorrow.

Every single time, they're starting from zero.

No context. No process. No memory of what worked before.

Skills flip this entirely.

A Skill is a markdown file that contains everything an AI needs to execute a task perfectly: the context, the steps, the format, the edge cases, the quality standards.

Once you build a Skill, you never explain that task again. You just say "use the podcast-show-notes skill" and the AI knows exactly what to do.

I've built Skills for:

  • Writing show notes from podcast transcripts
  • Researching YouTube guest candidates
  • Drafting follow-up emails to contacts
  • Generating LinkedIn posts from articles
  • Creating meeting prep briefs
  • Mining content ideas from transcripts

Each one took 15-30 minutes to build. Each one saves me hours every week.

The 4-Step Playbook

Here's the exact process I follow to turn any repetitive task into an AI automation.

Step 1: Brain Dump Your Daily Tasks

Open Claude (or any LLM) and list out everything you do repeatedly.

Don't filter. Don't organize. Just dump.

"I research podcast guests. I write show notes. I prep for calls. I draft follow-up emails. I create social posts. I schedule content. I update my CRM."

Get it all out. The messier the better at this stage.

Step 2: Ask Claude Which Tasks Can Become Skills

Paste your brain dump and ask:

"Which of these tasks could be turned into a reusable Skill file? A Skill is a set of instructions that helps an AI complete a task consistently. Rank them by automation potential."

Claude will identify tasks that:

  • Have repeatable steps
  • Follow a consistent format
  • Don't require real-time human judgment
  • Produce a predictable output

Skip the tasks that are too creative or too variable. Focus on the ones with clear inputs and outputs.

Step 3: Optimize BEFORE Building

This is the step everyone skips. Don't.

Before you turn a task into a Skill, ask Claude to help you optimize the process itself.

"Here's how I currently write podcast show notes: [your process]. How could this be improved? What steps am I missing? What would make the output better?"

You'll often discover:

  • Steps you're doing manually that could be eliminated
  • Quality checks you should add
  • Formats that work better for your audience
  • Edge cases you hadn't considered

Bake these improvements into your Skill. Now your AI isn't just replicating your current process. It's replicating your optimized process.

Step 4: Turn It Into a Skill File

Ask Claude to write the Skill file:

"Turn this optimized process into a Skill file. The Skill should include: the goal, the required inputs, step-by-step instructions, output format, quality standards, and example output."

A good Skill file has:

  • Clear trigger: When should this Skill be used?
  • Required inputs: What does the AI need to start?
  • Step-by-step process: Exactly what to do, in order
  • Output format: What the result should look like
  • Quality checks: How to verify the output is good
  • Example: A real example of great output

Save this as a markdown file. Now any AI agent can use it.

What This Actually Looks Like

Here's a real example. My podcast show notes Skill.

Before: I'd watch the episode, take notes, write a summary, format it for the description, add timestamps manually. 45 minutes per episode.

After: I paste the transcript, invoke the Skill, and get fully formatted show notes with timestamps, key quotes, and SEO-optimized description. 3 minutes.

The Skill file is about 200 lines. It includes:

  • The exact format I want
  • How to identify the best quotes
  • Where to place timestamps
  • What to include in the guest bio
  • How to write the hook

I built it once. I've used it 50+ times.

The Compound Effect

Here's what most people miss: Skills compound.

Build one Skill, save a few hours a week.

Build ten Skills, and you've essentially hired an AI team that knows your business.

Build twenty Skills, and you're operating at a completely different level than everyone still typing the same prompts over and over.

My AI agent Claire runs dozens of Skills automatically.

  • Meeting prep before calls
  • Research on new contacts
  • Daily content ideas
  • Follow-up reminders

I didn't build this overnight. I built it one Skill at a time, starting with the tasks that annoyed me most.

Start Here

Pick one task you do every week that:

  1. Takes more than 15 minutes
  2. Follows roughly the same steps each time
  3. Has a clear output

Run it through the 4-step framework today.

Brain dump → Identify → Optimize → Build.

In 30 minutes, you'll have your first Skill. In 30 days, you'll wonder how you ever worked without them.

Key Takeaways:

  • Skills are reusable instruction files that turn any AI into a specialist
  • Most people restart from zero every time they use AI. Skills fix that
  • The 4 steps: Brain dump → Identify automatable tasks → Optimize the process → Build the Skill file
  • Don't skip optimization. Your Skill should capture your BEST process, not your current one
  • Skills compound: Each one you build makes your AI team more capable
